The Sharing Community began in 1983 as a coordinated response by community and religious groups to the rising tide of poverty and homelessness in the Getty Square area of southwest Yonkers. St. Patrick's is one of several groups who for over a decade has supplied a monthly meal to the Sharing Community soup kitchen. Couples, families and/or individuals form a group that once a month prepares a meal of stew, salad, and dessert and delivers that food to St. Patrick's Parish Center. The food from all the St. Patrick's groups is delivered to the Sharing Community's "soup kitchen" in Yonkers on the fourth Sat. of each month where it is the mid-day meal, served to those in need.
Once a year, each of the groups from St. Patrick's takes a turn to serve that meal in Yonkers. By our participation and contribution of time, food and labor, we help to realize the mission of the Sharing Community "...believing in the dignity of every person, we accept the responsibility to nurture and care for those in need..."
